Day 121

My friend Rachel challenged me to a race. I’m trying to decide if I should concede now or wait until she starts running.

Rachel recommended running as exercise given my travels. It seems sensible. To stay motivated, we found a race to train for. The day she’s coming to Chicago aligns with a 10K, so we registered. One tiny snag, though. I can’t run a mile so the 10K, 6.21371 miles, we signed up for seems a bit ambitious.

When I mentioned it to my friend Jen, she said she was down to train with us too. We’re now all on a group text where we post treadmill images to each other to stay motivated.

We named our running group “Constance’s Crew,” in memory of my late daughter.

I will post race details in the comment section below just in case any readers want to join us.

The easiest part of training so far was buying running shoes and complaining about how bad at running I am. Google says I’m still too slow to even call what I’m doing running. In fact, I am not even jogging. My current speed is a walk that hogs a treadmill for an hour.

To make practicing her fine motor skills fun, I had made Constance a coloring book. The drawings were all of Constance’s favorite childhood memories. She loved looking at it and reminiscing. Coloring in it still required a lot of prompting. Constance’s Crew is going to use a simplified version of one of the coloring book images for our shirts.

If you want a Constance’s Crew shirt I will include a link below. Constance has three charities but the platform only allows us to donate to one at a time. As a result, we’ll order some shirts in a style now benefiting one of the charities and then if there is continued interest will set up another shirt order later benefiting another. I hope that makes sense. Just check out the comments section of this page.

Wardrobe complete, we now just have to figure out how to run 10K.

I used to tease my friends who ran long distances for fun that running is a hobby for mentally ill people who can’t convince anyone to have sex with them. Now that I’m running, I can say with confidence that I’ve never been more right.

Rachel, Did I? Now that you say that that does sound like me. In England, wishing you were here to visit so we could put off running together. Thanks for the pep talk coach!

Constance's Crew T-shirts are available at https://www.customink.com/fundraising/constance for the next 29 days benefiting Aspiritech.

I don't know if anyone will want one. It will take 6 orders for them to make the shirts. The minimum goal the website allowed was 50 so that's what's I put in. Thank you for joining Constance’s Crew. May Constance’s joy, kindness, and persistence inspire you.
