Some parents keep a lock of their child’s hair on them after their kid passes away. In addition to the fingerprint I keep in my wallet, I keep one of Constance’s toys, a blue dinosaur. It looks like a cartoon brontosaurus. I like fidgeting with it.
I find myself silent repeating, “Life is short,” whenever it is in my hands. Like Dumbo’s magic feather, it makes me feel fearless. I don’t know what I will do next, I don’t even know if I care but, whatever it is, I am not scared. Bravery comes naturally when you have nothing to lose.
